$1,000 to Save the Children

Save the Children hosted a pep rally for children and school leaders in rural south eastern Kentucky to celebrate the success of its Healthy Choices program. With support of the PepsiCo Foundation, the program has promoted healthy, active lifestyles and good nutrition choices for more than 5,000 schoolchildren across the region over the last three years. Save the Children and the PepsiCo Foundation are now replicating the successes of the Kentucky-based pilot program across rural America. “Healthy kids learn better, and healthy kids live better. Yet child obesity is threatening the growth and development of millions of American children,” said Kathy Spangler. “Children living in poverty in rural areas face the greatest risk.” Res Research shows an estimated 52 percent of rural children living in poverty are overweight or obese—20 percentage points higher than children nationally. Poor health and nutrition can negatively impact a child’s academic performance and overall growth and development. Thirty-seven percent of children in Kentucky between the ages of 10 to 17 are considered overweight or obese, according to the Foundation for a Healthy Kentucky. Save the Children has worked closely with schools across southeastern Kentucky to create awareness about the childhood obesity epidemic. Through its Healthy Choices program, Save the Children helps schools become agents of change for improving children’s health and--ultimately—helping children achieve their full potential. Save the Children’s Healthy Choices program aims to increase children’s access to healthy foods, opportunities for physical activity, and knowledge of healthy eating. As a result of the program, participating school leaders in Kentucky now recognize and prioritize the importance of providing children the opportunity to participate in high-quality, physical activity during the day. In addition, nutrition education has become a hands-on experience, exposing children and their families to the joy of making recipes that reinforce healthy, low-cost eating. released
